Using the Cisco Real-Time Monitoring Tool for CUCM Performance Monitoring

cucm469841589The Cisco Unified Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT) runs as a client application on your local PC and monitors real-time behavior of your system components. The client can be installed by downloading the file from CUCM Application -> Plugins page. It is available for both Windows- and Linux-based PCs or laptops.

RTMT is extremely useful for monitoring and troubleshooting Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and Unity Connection environments. New features may be added to RTMT as new versions of applications evolve.

When installing or upgrading your CUCM servers, it is always a good idea to install a current copy of RTMT client application to match the CUCM version. Older versions of RTMT client may not work with newer versions of CUCM. I always download the appropriate version of the “Cisco Unified Real-Time Monitoring Tool Administration Guide” to learn about the current capabilities of RTMT for my version of applications.

RTMT provides a set of canned views of both system resources (CPU, memory, etc.), as well as application counters (registered phones, calls in progress, etc.) under the Default profile when you first log in. These provide you with a snapshot of your environment right out of the box without creating any customized views.

However, in many cases, you may wish to create your own customized views of a variety of performance monitors. Not only that, you also might wish to create different views for different servers and applications in your environment. You can achieve this by creating your own personalized profiles, which can be saved for future use. You can switch between profiles during a single RTMT session, or you can open a profile during future access to see a consistent view of performance counters each time you log in.

To create a personalized profile, open the desired performance monitors and then take the following steps:

Step 1: Choose System > Profile.

The Preferences dialog box displays.

Step 2: Click Save.

The Save Current Configuration dialog box displays.

Step 3: In the Configuration name field, enter a name for this particular configuration profile.

Step 4: In the Configuration description field, enter a description of this particular configuration profile. You can enter any name and description you want into the profile configuration windows.

At this point, you have created your new profile.

To restore your view from one profile to another:

Step 1: Choose System > Profile.

The Preferences dialog box displays.

Step 2: Click the profile that you want to restore.

Step 3: Click Restore.

All windows with precanned settings and/or performance monitoring counters for the restored configuration open.

Performance monitoring allows you to:

  1. Monitor performance counters for all the servers in your cluster.
  2. Continuously monitor a set of preconfigured objects with the option to receive email notifications.
  3. Define counter threshold settings and alert notifications.

Alarm and performance monitoring continues in the background even after you close your desktop application.

There are many performance monitors available. The Cisco CallManager object contains most CUCM performance counters. One of the uses of these counters might be to alert an administrator when a resource such as a transcoder has been exhausted or has reached a critical threshold. Another use might be to verify that all phones have successfully registered to CUCM.

In summary, RTMT can be customized to show you different views of your resources and CUCM environment. Depending on the applications you have, you may have several different views defined that can be restored at any time to confirm current counter values.
