Redundancy means that there are multiple paths from a device to another. In the Ethernet world, the devices forwarding traffic are transparent to the end hosts (they do not modify the frames that are forwarded). If there are multiple forwarding paths, this then creates loops and causes storming issues (many multiple copies of the same frames) and instability. To restabilize the topology, Spanning Tree was developed to block the loops from being created, but the alternate paths are available if the primary paths fail.
