With the New Year comes new goals and aspirations. One thing I promised myself this year was to more overtly embrace social media technologies. It’s no secret that social media technologies like Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare are changing the way we interact with each other. At any given time, you can know all sorts of details about what your friends are doing for better or worse. If you have kids, you probably witnessed feats of texting prowess you couldn’t fathom doing yourself — it’s as if they were born with texting devices in their hands.
It’s no surprise businesses noticed the social networking phenomenon. They are flocking to these technologies to better understand how to harness the power they offer. By their very nature, they create communities of interest to better target products. That intelligence is gold to a business.
The learning industry is no exception. We all want to find better ways to reach customers and deliver the products they want. The question is how to harness the success of social networking to do that? The concept of social learning is not new. Modern Social Learning theory is closely associated with Julian Rotter, whose work dates back to the 1940’s. And Jay Cross was writing about informal learning well before the viral success of Facebook. As for delivering training over the internet, well that has been around for decades. So where does that leave us? Why have we not seen an explosion of new social learning over the internet? There must be a way to capture the best of all of these things to deliver an exceptional learning experience.
I have a passion for technology and learning. In this blog I’ll discuss (and perhaps sometimes rant about) the best way to blend my two passions and embrace the power of social networking to create new learning experiences to better train the workforce in this rapidly changing work environment.
